Tuomi Logistics - Glass walls for communal and acoustic office spaces

A significant part of the interior walls of Tuomi Logistics' new premises are made of glass. Inside, you can feel the presence of the outdoors all the time. Light flows beautifully from one space to the next. Light was one of the wishes of the staff when they were asked for their opinion on a comfortable workplace.

In November 2018, Tuomi Logistics moved to its new, renovated premises in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere. The property underwent a major renovation before the move, as the open-plan office space in the building was impractical and acoustics, for example, had not been taken into account at all. The premises now employ Tuomi Logistics' entire staff of 140 people. The renovation of the premises was carried out by Visura Oy and the interior architect was Arkkitehdit Kontukoski Oy. FP-Tuotteet supplied a total of 100 m2 of E160 partitioning fire glass partitions and 250 m2 of FG system glass partitions for the project. The sound insulation classes are mainly Rw 39 dB.

- We wanted to start this change project with wellbeing at the forefront. That's why the views of our staff were particularly important. Our employees also asked for so-called quiet workspaces alongside the open office. Now that the renovation is complete, all that's really old is the building's frame. This is the space that has been built to meet the needs of our staff and our operations," explains Juha Nurminen, Facility and Safety Manager of Tuomi Logistiikka Oy.

Good acoustics and the brightness provided by glass walls are an unbeatable combination in workspaces

The new Tuomi Logistics site offers many solutions to improve acoustics. For example, the open-plan office has been fitted with a masking system that plays unobtrusive background noise, blurring out the most distracting parts of the speech. The flooring materials have been specifically chosen for their sound-absorbing qualities. Acoustic panels have also been used imaginatively in the spaces to provide comfort and sound attenuation.

- Yes, acoustics has become a core issue in modern open plan offices. Nowadays, the use of glass is also possible, even if more attention is paid to acoustics. The glass walls we use have excellent sound insulation. By combining these two things, glass and acoustics, we can create a new type of modern and communal workspace for our staff," explains Nurminen.

A quiet workspace does not mean isolation from others

Tuomi Logistics' premises are a beautiful combination of glass, open-plan office space, a modern logistics centre and quiet working spaces. On the first floor of the building, there are individual, small offices where employees can go to work when they need to concentrate and have some peace and quiet. The clever use of glass has given these spaces a sense of space and light. The wall and door on the corridor side of the room are virtually all glass, allowing light to flood in. Glass allows the person working in the space to maintain eye contact with the world around them. This allows the worker to work in peace and quiet, but also to experience a sense of community with others. The glass used is sound-laminated, so it provides good acoustic properties and peace of mind for working in the space.

Fire-partitioned glass wall improves safety and space

The office side wall of the large logistics centre on the property is also EI60 fire-resistant glass. Safety requirements are high and the glass wall allows visitors to see the warehouse from the office side.

-Well-designed and supportive facilities increase safety. We now have clear passageways everywhere and the light from the glass also adds to the sense of security," Nurminen continues.

The FP Showroom was the venue for the selection of the space dividers

For the Tuomi Logistics building project, FP Products provided a showroom for the architect to see the different glass and door options and test their usability. Decisions on the choice of glass walls and doors were also made in the showroom, and FP-Tuotteet supported the architect with product development and sizing solutions.
