SKiB Campus, Pori – with a Skyfold vertical wall, the hall shared by school and city adapts to many uses

FP Products was responsible for the campus's adaptable space-dividing solutions from design support to installation. We were involved from the sketch stage, when JKMM Architects were looking for a solution for the hall that divides the space with sound insulation but disappears from view when the whole hall is needed.

To the multipurpose hall we supplied a ceiling-folding Skyfold vertical wall, between the hall and the dining room a 50-decibel sound-insulating FP Movable Wall and, to other spaces on the campus, twenty FP Folding Walls. All three belong to FP's adaptable partitioning products, with which a single space serves many purposes without permanent structures.

Across the hall we installed a Skyfold vertical wall, which descends from the ceiling with a key switch and folds back into the ceiling when the whole hall is needed. No floor tracks were installed and no side jambs were added to the walls, so when open the opening is completely free and the hall's slatted timber architecture continues uninterrupted. The wall panels also need no storage space of their own, which saves square metres on a campus where every existing space is needed.

Skyfold is fully automatic and quiet. A safety sensor stops the wall if an obstacle is left beneath it. Sound insulation is selected to suit the project: Skyfold models reach Rw values of 51–59 decibels, so two events can be held at the same time in the two halves of the divided hall. We matched the wall surface to the hall's light-coloured timber; surface options range from fabric to wood veneer and painted board.

Between the multipurpose hall and the school dining room we installed an FP Movable Wall. The panel wall has a sound insulation of 50 decibels, so a meal and an event in the hall can run side by side without disturbing each other. When the hall and dining room are combined, the staff move the panels aside along the ceiling track. There is no floor track, so the floor remains continuous.

Each panel has mechanically tightening top and bottom seals, and the end panel seals sideways with a telescopic seal. This way the sound insulation is achieved in practice, not just as a laboratory value. The wood-surfaced wall blends into the architecture of the dining room and the hall, and it is fitted with a pass door.

In addition to the hall, we supplied twenty FP Folding Wallsto other spaces on the campus. With a folding wall, two spaces are joined or separated in moments: the hinged panels fold into a stack at the end of the closing line and need no separate storage space.

We installed the walls top-hung, so no floor tracks were needed. The folding wall surface can be, for example, a whiteboard surface or an acoustic material, and a pass door can be fitted if required. The same product is also available with EI30 fire classification.

The collaboration began in spring 2022 with JKMM Architects, surveying FP Products' space-dividing solutions. We presented the options at our showroom and helped refine the solutions into the plans before the tendering stage. The Pori-based MVR-Yhtymä Oy was selected as the main contractor.

FP Products was involved all the way: from the sketch-stage survey to product selection, dimensioning, delivery and installation. A hall that can be adapted within minutes from a school day to a concert only works if the space-dividing solutions, their sound insulation and their connections to the building are resolved correctly from the start. FP Products delivered this chain from the drawing board to the finished building, and the result was realised according to the architect's plans.

The SKiB Campus was commissioned by Svenska Kulturfonden i Björneborg, which has promoted Swedish-language culture in Pori and the Satakunta region since 1919. The campus of more than 10,000 square metres combines two renovated protected buildings – a 1960s brick school and the 1930s Rosa Huset – with the new, mainly timber-built Kulturhuset Fiini. The complex was completed in 2025 and was one of the finalists for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture 2026.

The campus is a multipurpose, multilingual centre for learning and culture. In addition to the school, it offers city residents a library, a café, a restaurant and a multipurpose hall. The architectural starting point was a shared space for all generations, where learning, art and events intertwine. The same idea guided the space division: a single hall must serve the school day, a concert and a public event without the space being rebuilt every time.
